Espionage Act

As I was sitting here, reading about WikiLeaks (got bored with homework) I found a good interview with Daniel Ellsberg, the first man to be charged under the Espionage act of 1917 for leaking pentagon papers relating to the Vietnam war. This man is one of my new heroes. This interview was on how the laws take place, how America is slowly turning into a country preventing freedom of speech, and changing into a country similar to the UK.

As I was looking at this, and realized that there are many MANY flaws. Accordingly, if read this online, you have to return the paper you read it on to the government. If this is the case, when the internet comes into question.... well... return the web page? After reading it and looking at Obama's previous actions, I have to agree with Mr. Ellsberg in the possibility of the American Government passing even more legislation to limit our freedoms. So far, the patriot act did a major kick at that, looking in terms of monitoring tweets and peace groups. BUT! That is not why I am posting, no no it is not... the main thing I am looking at is how this act gives the Postmaster General the ability to prevent press from publishing articles if they feel it interferes with the government's plan...

...yeah...

wow... just... wow...

Well, as I said I would post ANYTHING that tends to take more than 20 minutes... *sigh* I guess I shall have to keep to that.

I just got a CRT monitor from our pile at home and hooked it up in my apartment. I have been programming and got slightly distracted as I realized that CRT's have that "Strobe" effect when you wave your hand in front of it... I've been watching my hand for 20 minutes now.

...

I need a bear to train.

Training A Bear

Ah yes, the ever illusive "training a bear" post that no blog can survive without. Why might you want to do this? SIMPLE! Who doesn't want to bring a little bit of style and class to the animal world?

As you can guess, This is the goal we have in mind. Now, according to Doug Seus (famous bear tamer/researcher), there are a few easy steps to get to our goal. Just use these simple tricks and you'll be on the fast track to classy and stylish wildlife.

Retinal Vein/Artery Occlusion

As I document my tangents of the weekend, this is actually the first. Retinal Occlusions and the differences therein.

Now, Retinal Occlusion is a fancy term for "vision going kaput". The difference between the two types (RVO and RAO) I will be covering is a simple one.. either a clot is in the Vein (RVO) or in the Artery (RAO). This is not a happy topic, as if it goes untreated, within 24 hours the damage is permanent. The effects can range from just a little fuzz to complete blindness in the eye.

There are not too many treatments for this, as the damage most often cannot be undone. The most common treatment for RVO and RAO would be to remove the clot. This is done in three common ways...
  1. Inhale CO2 to dilate the arteries/veins in the retina
  2. Massage the eyeball. (No hot oils please)
  3. tPA - Tissue Plasminogen Activator - a drug that breaks up clots.
That's about it on this one. I can edit it/update it over the next week, as I am sure it shall be revisited.

"Snuck" Sneaked In

This is a very moot point, but I would like it to be considered. Before tonight, I had never used the word, nor had I heard the word, "sneaked". That has changed now. Apparently, "sneaked" is the proper way to say "snuck", although "snuck" is the new standard. Yes, there shall always be a time and a place to sound like a 3yr old and say "She sneaked a cookie" but to me, it just sounds... off.

This got me starting to think about other words that have been replaced and changed. South Park may be the best at stating this with their "fag" argument.

This is basically the argument with "snuck" and "sneaked". Older definitions cannot be forgotten, as they still have meaning, but new definitions tend to take precedence. If you care to agree/disagree, I will eventually post more of my linguistic arguments on here, but as of right now I have homework XD

Glowing Trees

http://inhabitat.com/2010/11/10/gold-nanoparticles-could-transform-trees-into-street-lights/?ref=nf

This one is a lot shorter than the others simply for the fact that I am lazy. Read it for yourself. :)

Space-Time Cloak

A fun new discovery leads to a new way to get a chicken across the road... the amazing TIME-SPACE CLOAK! OOO! AAA! Yes folks, it is finally here! What is it you ask? Simple! It is hiding something inside of light to make it invisible.

As light travels, the light in front speeds up. If you slow down the protons in the back, you create a gap in the middle. Through here, you can transport energy and matter, then simply speed the protons back up to their normal speed and slow the ones in front down a little. The onlooker will be none-the-wiser.

Paul Kinsler, Imperial College London

S
o, why would we ever want a chicken to cross the road like this, you ask? There are many practical applications for this in the world of computing. Computers are in a few years going to make that long awaited leap to using light instead of electricity for processing. When this switch comes, this is one possible way to increase processing power.

Calorie Restriction

Have you ever been incredibly poor? Ever been unhealthy? Ever been a fat American? Well here's your chance to change! (no, don't move to Mexico, easier than that)

This tangent (when I was about to go to bed) is thanks to good ol' James John. As the name shows, this is about Calorie Restriction. Now, this was a concept i thought of in improper terms, but it appears it may be healthier than I thought.

Calorie Restriction
Calorie Restriction is a diet choice that has low calorie count, while maintaining micro-nutrients. Basically, it is consuming very few calories while not suffering from malnutrition, which is a very hard line to find. If you do not get enough, you may end up suffering from anemia and malnutrition. If you get too many, you're obviously not restricting them Mr. Flabby ;)

UPS AND DOWNS
Now, here are the potential benefits of this process.
  • Improved life span
  • Lower bad cholesterol, higher good
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Lower free-radical count
  • Less cost in terms of food
  • Reduced risk of cancer (all kinds)
  • Reduced risk of stroke
  • Reduced risk of mental disorders (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, etc)
  • Longer retention of mental capacities
  • Increased mental capacity
  • Decreased risk of disease (Virtually no cases of diabetes have been found in users of CR)
  • VERY low triglyceride levels. Participants in CR studies were in the lower 5% of 20 year-olds for their levels... when they were 85...
